Sister Story - Jess

Name: Jessica

Age: 22

About: I recently graduated from Exeter with an English degree and decided to travel with my best friends before joining the real world. It was the best decision I ever made - who wants to grow up before they have to?

Why did you decide to travel? I quickly learnt that working 9-5, sitting at an office desk, staring at a computer screen and drinking tea can be very soul draining, so essentially I am travelling to escape reality for as long as possible. I’m also not sure what job or industry I want to go into yet, so travelling is giving me a bit more time to think about it.

Where do you come from? Hertfordshire, England.

Where do you want to go next? After New Zealand we are heading to Sydney, Singapore, Indonesia, Burma, Vietnam and Thailand. We might also do Cambodia or Laos depending on how much time we have left, but we decided we’d rather get to explore a country properly, than tick off as many countries as possible from a list.

What is your number one tip for travelling? Buy a pair of Birkenstocks - they are a God send! They may resemble the style of sandals your dad would wear, but they are so comfortable. I haven’t taken mine off!

What has been your biggest challenge to overcome? I am the worlds biggest wimp and so I cannot begin to describe how proud I am of myself for doing a skydive. I may have cried a little bit/lot whilst I was up there, but the feeling of accomplishment I felt afterwards meant that it was all worth while in the end.

What do you miss about home? Cheese!!! I love cheese so much and I miss having a block of cheddar in my fridge to nibble on when the going gets tough.

What have you learned about yourself? There is a traveller rule that you shouldn’t wear make up whilst travelling, but I have learnt that I am not ready to let go of mascara just yet.

Favourite Quote? You’re never alone when you’re travelling.

Favourite new thing? L&P - New Zealand’s Lemon flavoured sparkling drink. It is what dreams are made of. I don’t know what I am going to do without it when I leave.

What advise would you give to other girls wanting to travel? Wake up early and explore. When you’re travelling it’s easy to party all night and sleep all day, but you can drink anywhere in the world. Make the most of every place you visit and try new things.
