Sister Story - Evey

Name: Evangeline (Evey)

Age: 22

About: Recently became a Law graduate from Exeter Uni

Why did you decide to travel? To be honest it was because I was completely clueless as to what I wanted to do as a career and I felt too young to go straight into a law job. I also missed living with my best friends from Uni so we started to plan our next adventure together.

Where do you come from? Hampshire, UK

Where do you want to go next? I am currently travelling with 3 friends from University around New Zealand, before this we visited Hong Kong. From here I am travelling to Sydney, Singapore, Indonesia, Asia including Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand. Then I am flying back to Sydney to live for 7 months on my own.

What is your number one tip for travelling? If you think you might like to do something, however crazy or scary you think it sounds, go for it! You don’t regret the things you do, but you definitely will regret not doing the things you don’t.

What has been your biggest challenge to overcome? Trying not to lose things - especially my passport (which I have lost abroad before and it was not pretty!). So far so good though, so fingers crossed for the rest of the trip

What do you miss about home? Having traveller ‘luxuries’ in the fridge everyday - cheddar cheese, orange juice and I am already dreading missing my Nana’s roast dinner on Easter Sunday.

What have you learned about yourself? I am more brave than I thought I was - but still not brave enough to do a bungee!

Favourite Quote? 'Don’t judge a book by it’s cover'. It’s very refreshing to meet and make friends with so many different types of people when travelling, often people you might never hang out with at home.

Favourite new thing? (i.e. food you have tried, skill, tradition, place) I am a bit freaky about the sea and open water. My favourite new thing was swimming with hundreds of dusky dolphins out at sea in Kaikoura at sunrise. I am now going to go for it in the water for the rest of my trip and try a surf lesson and scuba diving course in Bali.

What advise would you give to other girls wanting to travel? You have to go! Exploring such beautiful places and basically going on a holiday for months at a time really will not be a decision you will regret!

For New Zealand in particular: if you want to do the Kiwi Experience tour - start in Auckland. This is the place that most people start the tour and the buses are a lot more fun and sociable this way round. If you start in Christchurch/Wellington, people are already getting tired and are less likely to be so chatty!
