Sister Story - Annie

Name: Annie

Age: 21

About: I graduated from Exeter Uni last summer and have been working since to save money for travelling.  I am travelling with three other girls who i lived with at uni.

Why did you decide to travel? I decided to go travelling to escape the reality of life after uni and to put off thinking about getting a job for as long as possible.

Where do you come from? Hampshire, UK

Where do you want to go next? After NZ I am going to Sydney, Singapore, Indonesia, Mynamar, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.  I have only been away for a month but am already working out ways I can stay away longer and am thinking about where else I would like to visit.

What is your number one tip for travelling? Check the weather before. We thought it was summer in Hong Kong, but it was actually three degrees.  We had all packed summer clothes and were freezing for four days despite wearing 8 layers each day (which was most of the contents of our suitcases.).

What has been your biggest challenge to overcome? I haven't faced any major challenges as of yet.  When you travel in a group, I think its important to understand the other people you are travelling with, be sympathetic to what they are feeling and be accepting of this.

What do you miss about home? I thought I would miss having my own space as am travelling in a group of four, but haven't at all yet. I do miss home comforts and home cooked meals, we just seem to eat things that can be made easily and quickly.

What have you learned about yourself? On our first night in NZ, we stayed in a twelve bed dorm and it was pretty gross.  I questioned then whether I would be able to stand living in hostels for 4 months.  It has actually been absolutely fine and I have really enjoyed it.

Favourite Quote? Sleep when your dead

Favourite new thing? (i.e. food you have tried, skill, tradition, place) Swimming with dolphins in Kaikoura was amazing.

What advise would you give to other girls wanting to travel? You will meet such a variety of people when travelling. I never considered travelling alone before, but so many people do and i would definitely do it now.  Someone I met said to me “you are never alone when you are travelling” and i really think this is true.
