Sister Story - Ylenia

Name: Ylenia

Age: 24

About: Moved from Italy to London in 2013 on my own with my life all packed in one suitcase. Currently experiencing life in England whilst deciding on the next big move.

Why did you decide to travel? To improve my English, gain perspective and life experience. Build an independent life and future by making the most of every opportunity available.

Where do you come from? Lived in Sicily for the first 21 years of my life!

Where do you want to go next? To meet my cousin in Australia/South East Asia or wherever else in the world she will be this summer.

What is your number one tip for travelling? Just go, don’t prepare yourself for failure by making a Plan B. Believe that what you want to do is your only option.

What has been your biggest challenge to overcome? Rebuilding a life from scratch, having new relationships, developing new habits…even buying new clothes.

What do you miss about home? The sun, the sea, my family, THE FOOD

What have you learned about yourself? I can easily get along with all kind of people and I can look after myself more than I ever thought I could. I am braver than I have ever been. I was always very shy and struggled with talking to strangers, making phone calls etc. I am now much more confident, I am able to talk to anyone without feeling nervous. I guess this is a result of learning to not care about ‘embarrassing’ myself.

Favourite Quote? “Not all those who wander are lost” J.R.R. Tolkien

Favourite new thing? (i.e. food you have tried, skill, tradition, place) Milk in my tea, english parks, roast dinners

What advise would you give to other girls wanting to travel? Consider everything, be organised, be prepared to work and save enough money to be safe and comfortable. Also, don’t spend your days missing home…as I have learned from the wise Mr Tolkien “ Home is behind, the world is ahead”.
